Red Shirts Receiving Athletic Honors

Most of Rho Sigma's charter members were varsity athletes, and the Fraternity has continued that tradition, supplying OBU with most of its outstanding sportsmen. Rho Sigma has provided Ouachita with more football players than the rest of Ouachita's fraternities combined and has had more players in football, baseball, basketball, track and cross country, and golf than any other fraternity. Several have gone on to careers as professional athletes, coaches, and officials. We apologize that this listing of Red Shirt Athletic Honorees is incomplete. Records are spotty, so some of the honorees have undoubtedly been omitted. 1931-32 John "Big Shot" Floyd, All-State football Joe "Strychnine" Strickland, All-State basketball 1932-33 John "Big Shot" Floyd, All-State football Fred "Strick" Strickland, All-State basketball Joe "Strychnine" Strickland, All-State basketball 1933-34 John "Big Shot" Floyd, All-State football, state discus record Fred "Strick" Strickland, All-State basketball Joe "Strychnine" Strickland, All-State basketball Ray "Woody" Woodell, 2nd team All-State football 1934-35 Elmo "Modie" Chaney, All-State football John "Big Shot" Floyd, All-State football (captain); state shot and discus champion; voted Best Athlete in Campus Who's Who Charles Varnell, state javelin champion Claude "Zebe" Perry, state high jump champion Hubert Cone, state pole vault co-champion Albert Mosely, hon. mention, All-State football Raymond "Rough House" Richards, hon. mention, All-State football Ralph "Rabbit" Mann, All-State basketball Fred "Strick" Strickland, All-State basketball Joe "Strychnine" Strickland, All-State basketball (Joe Strickland went to the Cleveland Indians baseball team upon graduation in May 1935) Ray "Woody" Woodell, 2nd team All-State football Sinclair "Dolly" Winburn, hon. mention, All-State football 1935-36 (incomplete) Elmo "Modie" Chaney, All-State football Claude "Zebe" Perry, unanimous All-State quarterback Sinclair "Dolly" Winburn, All-State football; voted Best Athlete in Campus Who's Who (11 other Red Shirts were named to 2nd or 3rd team or honorable mentions, All-State football) 1936-37 Joe Arnette, All-State football Elmo "Modie" Chaney, All-State football; voted Best Athlete in Campus Who's Who Hubert Cone, state pole vault co-champion John "Big Shot" Floyd, state discus record "Zebe" Perry, state high jump champion Fred "Strick" Strickland, All-State basketball Charles Varnell, state javelin champion 1937-38 Joe Arnette, All-State football: voted Best Athlete in Campus Who's Who Fred "Strick" Strickland, 2nd team All-State football James "Red" Vannoy, state golf doubles champion 1938-39 Willard "Slim" Goodwin, All-State basketball Joe Langston, All-State football 1939-40 J.T.
