Opportunities for Participation

... IN SOCIAL LIFE Rho Sigma has always been the campus social leader. We sponsor a number of both campuswide and members-only events each semester. Our annual parties after the Henderson games draw hundreds of Ouachita and Henderson students! Some 400 attended in 2002, and that number was probably doubled in 2005. Besides victory parties, we co-sponsor several social events with Ouachita and Henderson sororities, such as the Blackout Party with Chi Delta or the Crawfish Boil with E.E.E. We usually take several road trips, and we often go skiing for a fall outing. Our spring is crammed with events, including Rush, the annual Spring Outing, the annual Buffalo River float trip, and the Founders' Day Feast. ... IN SPIRIT ACTIVITIES Rho Sigma IS Tiger Spirit. Rho Sigma is the Cheerleaders' choice to host the Henderson pep rally, which includes the annual torchlight parade and bonfire. In 2003, Red Shirts handed more than 300 torches to students. Other traditional activities include putting together the Game Ball Relay Run and creating run-throughs for home football games. Of course, we support ALL the Tiger teams and sometimes "serenade" women's dorms with our famous cowbells. We annually sponsor the All-Night Bell Ring and Tiger Watch at the Tiger statue to summon Tiger Spirit for the Henderson game. Fall 2007 marked the beginning of a new spirit tradition, the Battle of the Ravine Festival. ... IN ATHLETICS Red Shirts and Ouachita athletics go hand in paw, so it isn't surprising that almost all of the Red Shirts are involved with varsity or intramural sports. Rho Sigma has provided the Tigers with the bulk of the players in football, baseball, basketball, golf, swimming, track and field (when OBU still had that team), and tennis. Red Shirts also were instrumental in beginning both rugby and soccer team at Ouachita. Red Shirts remain active in the various varsity sports. We are well-represented on the football and golf teams this year. For more information, check out our athletic honorees in the What We've Done section of the Menu. Rho Sigma is also the proud owner of the best overall intramural sports record on campus. We have won more championships than any other campus organization, including the longest unbroken strings of football and softball championships. Our string of over 30 consecutive intramural football victories from the early Sixties has yet to be bested. ... IN ACADEMICS It isn't widely known on campus, but Rho Sigma has always had a cumulative grade point average well above the all-men's average. Like the other social clubs, we have a 2.0 GPA requirement for active membership, and we have always recognized and promoted academic achievement. The Red Shirts are often at or near the top of all fraternities academically. Rho Sigma has a standing award of $100 for any member who maintains a 4.0 grade point average for a semester. We've placed a greater percentage of our membership in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities over the years than any other Ouachita fraternity. There are also several Red Shirt-endowed scholarships available to qualifying students, and a large proportion of our alumni hold advanced degrees. In fact, more Red Shirts have made careers in education than any other campus fraternity alumni. ... IN HUMAN SERVICE The Red Shirts have the best record of community service on campus. Our past contributions to charity and community service far outstrip other campus groups. We have received numerous service awards from charitable organizations such as the American Red Cross, Toys for Tots, Arkadelphia Attention Home, Twin Rivers Medical Center, Arkansas Children's Colony, Group Living Inc., and the Abused Women and Children Shelter. In 2006-2007, Rho Sigma raised over $21,000 for multiple sclerosis as the top team in the state in the annual MS Walk. Red Shirts also raised more than $2,000 in domations for leukemia victim Scott Neathery with the annual Game Ball Relay Run.
