Who are the Red Shirts?

Who are we? We're those guys in the red blazers! You've probably heard that we're a bunch of jocks and wild men. We have our share of those guys, but we're much more than that. The Red Shirts don't fit into a stereotype. We're a brotherhood that is united more by our beliefs than by how we look or what we do. WE'RE INDIVIDUALS. Rho Sigma practices unity without uniformity. From our beginning as Ouachita's first fraternity in 1935, we have sought leaders from every area of campus life instead of concentrating on a particular "type." Through the Values of Rho Sigma, men from different backgrounds -- but similar ideals -- unite with a common purpose. The Red Shirts were also the first social club at Ouachita to emphasize the value of individuality and diversity. We have emphasized it since 1935. The others have followed our lead. WE'RE ATHLETES. Red Shirts believe in "a healthy mind in a healthy body." Rho Sigma has always valued the role of athletic competition in helping establish pride and loyalty in Ouachita, and in spreading the word about the University. Rho Sigma has furnished the Tigers with most of its athletic leaders and with competitors in every varsity sport. In addition, the Fraternity has fostered friendships among the students through participation in intramural sports, compiling the best campus intramural record along the way. WE'RE SCHOLARS. Rho Sigma recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement. We believe the lifelong pursuit of knowledge is the key to a fuller, more successful life. Rho Sigma has always maintained a cumulative grade point average significantly above the all men's average, believing that we gain the harmonious development of the powers of the individual only through education. During our seven decades of existence, we have often had the highest cumulative grade point average of all the campus fraternities. WE'RE LEADERS. "Work hard, play hard," is a motto we live by at Rho Sigma. Work hard, because we excel in leadership, academics, and service to others. Play hard, because we recognize that there is more to life than classes and grades. The Fraternity was created as the best of the best. We intend to lead rather than follow, originate rather than imitate. In short, we don't simply follow trends -- we create them. WE'RE FRIENDS. Rho Sigma isn't a clique. When you join the Fraternity no one expects you to give up your non-affiliated friends. Rho Sigma believes that every individual has worth, and that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. As a result, the Red Shirts have always sponsored more activities and events for the entire student body than any other Ouachita fraternity. Often, we sponsor more activities and events than all the other campus fraternities combined. WE'RE BROTHERS. Red Shirts are more than a fellowship -- we are a family. Believing that one man is no man, Rho Sigma offers the benefits of belonging. Joining Rho Sigma gives Red Shirts opportunities to get to know men of diverse backgrounds they might otherwise never meet. Through shared experiences and commitment, Red Shirts develop a bond that goes beyond friendship. Brotherhood is the basis of Rho Sigma, and because of it we accomplish far more than we could do as individuals.
